At the age of 15 Annie Oakley was already a hero to girls and women in her community. At a downtown Cincinnati hotel Annie stepped up to a challenge issued by traveling entertainer and marksman, Frank Butler. Frank laughed at Annie when he first saw his opponent. That smile was quickly wiped away after "Little Sure Shot Annie" took her first shot.
Annie defeated Frank, who was so impressed he invited her to join his traveling show. Annie's skill as a marksman combined confident attitude propelled her to be one of the most famous sharp shooting stars in American history.
Growing up near Cincinnati, Annie chose the last name Oakley as her stage name. We are proud to celebrate this amazing lady. She has close connections to the neighborhood in which our store is located. This graphic depicts Annie standing on a moving horse while shooting targets, during one of her shows.
